While Carefree and Cave Creek are today a home for upper-income retirees and an enclave for artists and entrepreneurs, the first inhabitants of the area surrounding Black Mountain were Native Americans known as the Hohokam, who appeared about 750 A.D. They were an agrarian society of hunters and gatherers who also used irrigation to maintain crops.

The New River Mountains are part of a region extending southwards from the southeast of the Black Hills of central Arizona. The region contains mesas, hills, and mountain peaks; the region is bordered on the west by the Black Canyon, where the Agua Fria River flows south towards Phoenix, and on the east, canyons where the Verde River also flows south to enter the Phoenix valley.
Black Mountain is the ninth-highest peak in the Davis Mountains and it ranks as 21st-highest in the state of Texas. [1] [2] Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises over 2,000 feet (610 m) above Big Aguja Canyon in 1.25 mile (2 km). The mountain is composed of 35 million-year-old igneous rock. [4]
The Cave Creek Inn was built in 1920 and is Cave Creek's longest operating commercial building. It is now occupied by a restaurant. The Cave Creek Service Station was built in 1925. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. [5] Frontier Town, which is also pictured, is located at 6245 E. Cave Creek Road.
