The station was first opened by the South Eastern Railway on 1 September 1866 as Eltham for Mottingham. [3] In 1892 it was renamed Eltham & Mottingham. In 1927 it became Mottingham. The goods yard on the down side to the west of the platforms included a large coal office. A footbridge linking the two platforms was opened in the 1890s.
Since 2020 the illuminations season has been extended to run until after the Christmas and New Year celebrations. The 2024–2025 season ran from 30 August 2024 until 5 January 2025. The 2025 switch on will take place on 29 August 2025 with the length and switch off date yet to be announced.
