The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is an NHS trust which provides physical health, mental health and ambulance services for the Isle of Wight. The trust is unique in being the only integrated acute, community, mental health and ambulance health care provider in England. [4] It runs St Mary's Hospital and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
The trust was formed on 1 October 2024 following the merger of Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and also incorporates the community and mental health services formerly provided by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust. The merger was approved in November 2023 and was originally planned for April 2024, but was delayed twice. [1] [2]
The sculpture, which was created by Liliane Lijn and commissioned by the Isle of Wight Health Authority, was installed in 1997. [6] A new Medical Assessment Unit with 24 beds and space for 6 ambulant patients opened in August 2015. [7]

It became the Isle of Wight Mental Hospital in the 1920s and joined the National Health Service as Whitecroft Hospital in 1948. The hospital was procured under a Private Finance Initiative contract to replace the old Lymington Hospital in 2004. It was designed by Murphy Philipps Architects and constructed by Ryhurst [1] at a cost of £36 million. [2]
The trust was formed on 1 April 2011 following the merger of Hampshire Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Hampshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. [3] On 1 October 2024, the trust combined with Solent NHS Trust and Isle of Wight NHS Trust to form one large trust Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
