The next year, the highway was renamed the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway. It is one of eight toll facilities operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority. The toll, which is levied on northbound vehicles only, has since July 1, 2013, been $8 for two axles plus $8 for each additional axle.
Although the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway is referred to as a toll road, tolls are only collected at a gantry located a mile north of the Millard E. Tydings Memorial Bridge over the Susquehanna River, for northbound traffic only. Vehicles that do not traverse this section, and all southbound vehicles, do not pay a toll.
Today, tolls remain on Maryland's Fort McHenry Tunnel and John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, the Delaware Turnpike, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the New Jersey Turnpike, New York's George Washington Bridge and New England Thruway, the New Hampshire Turnpike, and the Maine Turnpike.
