Left to right: Cooper's hawk, sharp-shinned hawk, and the red-tailed hawk (not to scale). In the United States, chickenhawk or chicken hawk is an unofficial designation for three species of North American hawks in the family Accipitridae: Cooper's hawk (also called a quail hawk), the sharp-shinned hawk, and the Buteo species red-tailed hawk.
In flight, this hawk soars with wings often in a slight dihedral, flapping as little as possible to conserve energy. Soaring is by far the most efficient method of flight for red-tailed hawks, so is used more often than not. [75] Active flight is slow and deliberate, with deep wing beats.
The distinctive long-tailed, large headed form of Cooper's hawk in flight; short wings, seen when flapping, are also characteristic. Like a majority of diurnal birds of prey in the Northern Hemisphere, Cooper's hawk is a partial migrant. They tend to be most migratory in the north and largely to partially sedentary elsewhere.
She notes that spotting a hawk is widely considered a favorable omen, also explaining how the Bible also says that hawks are “unfit” for eating (Leviticus 11:16). View the original article to ...
In bird flight aerodynamics, the area of interest is the total wing area, that is, the area of both wings plus the area of the intervening portion of the body known as the "root box". [10] The root box is estimated from a measurement of the wing width at the base (the root chord ) and the difference between the wingspan and two times the extent ...

Hawks fly by flapping their wings rapidly then relying on momentum to glide through the air. [20] Like other birds, they are known to form flocks when migrating, which improves survival rates over traveling alone. Flocks of birds, especially hawks, are sometimes called "kettles" in the United States. [non sequitur] [19]: 215–16
