Ernest J. Humphrey was born in 1868 in Big Rapids, Michigan. In 1886 he moved to Ontonagon County to work in the lumber industry. He eventually settled in Ewen, and in 1900 married Edna Butts. The couple purchased 160 acres at this location in 1906. At first, they rented a nearby house as the farm was started.

It was named for W. A. Ewen, a treasurer of the railroad. It also received a Post Office named Ewen Station in 1889, shortened to Ewen in 1894. [5] The Ewen Post Office, ZIP code 49925, serves much of the township area. Bruce Crossing is about 5 miles east on M-28 and Matchwood about 6 miles west.
Matchwood is an unincorporated community at on M-28 about 6 miles west of Ewen and 9 miles east of Bergland. [4] It was named for the Diamond Match Company, which owned most of the pine forest in the area. The company founded the settlement in 1888 to provide for logging camps.

Highway M-28 passes through the center of town, leading east 19 miles (31 km) to Bruce Crossing and southwest 20 miles (32 km) to Wakefield. M-64 leads north from Bergland 17 miles (27 km) to the shore of Lake Superior and 30 miles (48 km) to Ontonagon, the county seat. Bergland is bordered to the west by the Lake Gogebic CDP.
