The film is set in Italy in 1922. Two friends returning from the First World War, Rocchetti and Gavazza, join the Fascist Party in Milan.While the latter is an opportunist, the former is a Roman Catholic who is persuaded by his friend to join the party, and is convinced by the revolutionary program issued in Piazza San Sepolcro.
It is the home of nationalist poet Arcangelo Bardacci, whom he idolizes and whose writings prompted him to become a fascist. Upon reaching Bardacci's house, he hears that the poet had joined the Royal Italian Army in Albania and perished in the struggle. Bardacci is actually alive, planning to hide in the cellar until the fascist regime collapses.
