The business was relocated to Brooklyn in 1884 and took the name J.H. Williams & Co in 1887. The company was one of the first to offer mass-produced drop-forged hand tools. [3] A second factory was opened in Buffalo, New York in 1914, now the site of General Motors' Tonawanda Engine plant. [4] The company was acquired by Snap-on in 1993.
The company has a tool line of over 3,500 items including wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, tool boxes and air tools. In 2021, SK was acquired by Hangzhou GreatStar Industrial. Jay Leno described the company as "an iconic American brand for decades," [2] and the company is known for inventing the round-head ratchet wrench.
Lowe's and manufacturing partner J.H. Williams launched Kobalt in 1998, [1] with the intention of competing against rival retailers Sears and The Home Depot and their respective Craftsman and Husky tool brands. [2] In 2003, the Danaher Corporation began producing the majority of Kobalt hand tools. [3] [4]
The Craftsman trademark was registered by Sears on May 20, 1927. [2] Arthur Barrows, head of the company's hardware department, liked the name Craftsman and reportedly bought the rights to use it from the Marion-Craftsman Tool Company for $500 (equivalent to $8,770 in 2023). [3] The brand's early customers were mostly farmers.
In 1933, Plomb released what is commonly credited as the first combination wrench. [ 1 ] Plomb acquired a number of companies during the 1940s, including Cragin Tool of Chicago, Illinois in 1940, P&C Tool of Oregon in 1941, Penens Tool of Cleveland, Ohio in 1942, and J.P. Danielson of Jamestown, New York in 1947. [ 2 ]
