In South Korea, there are about 3,200 general hospitals nationwide. This list illustrates the 45 senior general hospitals (Korean: 상급종합병원), which are general hospitals capable of providing high-level medical services, accredited by the ministry of health and welfare of the Republic of Korea.
In 1924, the viceroyalty moved the site of the hospital to the current location of SNUH. When Imperial Japan surrendered to the United States in 1945, Korea was liberated from Japanese rule. After liberation, the government of the Republic of Korea installed Seoul National University's School of Medicine on the site of the Viceroyalty Hospital.

With a capacity of 2,732 licensed beds and a total floor area of approximately 280,000 square meters (85,000 Pyeong ), it stands as the largest hospital in Korea.
