West Roxbury is a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, bordered by Roslindale and Jamaica Plain to the northeast, the village of Chestnut Hill and the town of Brookline to the north, the city of Newton to the northwest, the towns of Dedham and Needham to the southwest, and Hyde Park to the southeast.

The later annexations of Brighton and West Roxbury, both in 1874, and that of Hyde Park in 1912, eventually made Brookline into an exclave of Norfolk County. The town has a history of racial discrimination in zoning, which has led to a disproportionately wealthy population and a very low percentage of Black residents, at only 2.5%.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Lower Berkshire Valley CDP has a total area of 1.03 square miles (2.67 km 2), of which 0.02 square miles (0.05 km 2), or 2.23%, are water. [1] The area is drained by the Rockaway River , which passes just east of the CDP boundary and flows east to the Passaic River at the Essex County border.

The town of Roxbury was formed in 1799 from the town of Stamford. It was part of Albany county when the state of New York was first split into counties. Roxbury was the birthplace and the home of naturalist John Burroughs. A memorial site has been placed by his birthplace. Jay Gould, the railroad financier, was also born in the town.
