The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD / ˈ r ɪ z d iː /, pronounced "Riz-D" [3]) is a private art and design school in Providence, Rhode Island.The school was founded as a coeducational institution in 1877 by Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf, who sought to increase the accessibility of design education to women. Beginning in 1975, Woodman attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, Rhode Island. She studied in Rome between 1977 and 1978 in a RISD honors program. Because she spoke fluent Italian, she was able to befriend Italian intellectuals and artists. [13] She returned to Rhode Island in late 1978 to graduate from RISD. [11] [7]

The school originally opened as STEM School and Academy to 480 students, grades 6–9, o August 15, 2011. [3] It was led by principal David Floodeen. [3] [4] In 2012, the board of directors hired Penny Eucker as executive director. A grade was added every year until they had grades 6-12 in 2014.
