The name Western Ghats derives from the word ghat and the cardinal direction in which it is located with respect to the Indian mainland. Ghat, a term used in the Indian subcontinent, depending on the context, could either refer to a range of stepped hills such as the Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats, or a series of steps leading down to a body of water or wharf.

Sahyadri Tiger Reserve is a reserve in the state of Maharashtra, created by the Indian government in 2008. Ascents of the mountain are normally made from one of two base villages. Shirpunje village is located 22 kilometres (14 mi) from Rajur and is situated on the northern side of the mountain. Using this village as a start point, the peak of Ghanchakkar can be reached in around 2.5 hours.
The fort is about 50 km via Pabe ghat southwest of Pune in the Western Ghats of the Sahyadri mountain ranges at the base village Velhe. One can go from Pune via Satara road and take right at Nasarapur village. This distance is near about 65 km. It is the highest fort in the Pune district.
Narayangaon is located 656 m (2,152 ft) above sea level on the western margin of the Deccan plateau. It is situated on the leeward side of the Sahyadri mountain range, which forms a barrier from the Arabian sea. Narayangaon is on the bank of the river Meena. A wide hill range in the south separates the town from the adjoining Ambegaon taluka.
The Eastern part of the Western Ghats, or Sahyadri mountains, is called jangalapatti. This mainly encompasses the Jawhar, Mokhada, and Vikramgad talukas. The western part of the mountains district is called bandarpatti which includes Vasai, Palghar, Dahanu. The third section is characterized by broad and flat land, including the Wada taluka.
