Friendly Visitor Program The New York City Friendly Visitor Program was founded in 1979, and was the first of its kind in the nation, matching volunteers with LGBTQ+ older people for social and emotional support in the form of weekly home visits and calls.

The committee publicizes the program, screens applications, checks references, interviews families in their homes and approves new hosts. The committee members also make follow-up visits to all participating host families every three years.
