My png files are just showing the default icon and I am losing it. I don't want to have to click every image to view it! Please let me know if anything worked for you or if you know what else I could try! I am creating resources for back to school (I'm a teacher) and this is really dragging down my efficiency! ...and my will to make said resources!
The png format is visually superior to ico and it is far more flexible. I also have hundreds of png icons I have collected & made personally for my computers. This is ANOTHER STEP BACKWARDS FOR WINDOWS OS, instead of augmenting the experience of the user it deprecates to a system that is 25 years back with Windows 95 and prior.
I've been having the same issue with .rw2 (Panasonic RAW) files, although things like .jpg/.tif/png work fine. I've installed the RAW image extension from the store and tried both of the below things, but it doesn't seem to work.
I have created a png image and i want to use that as the icon for all my files and folders, but vista only allows ico files to be used as icons so how do i convert the png to the ico?
A few months later (nowadays) I decided to format my laptop, and delete all the files this time. Did it, everything working perfectly but my PNG icons. They're having the same issue like they used to a few months ago. I already tried to reconstruct my iconchace file, checking the "File> Show icon on thumbnails" thing, but nothing works.
Download the free Format Factoy, it will convert png to ico, I use it all the time to create icons for my software . . . it is in my opinion the best quick conversion software available. A bit if advice, when you are installing it, click the 'Click Here' button on both sides of this window to stop it also installing ByteFence and Yahoo Search ...
An issue I'm having is that whenever I save a PNG picture, the thumbnail / icon would have the picture and a solid black backgroud. This makes it hard to see the picture (especially since 99% are mainly black lines) and makes it extremely hard to work with. Things I tried: Updating the drive. Cleaning up files via disk cleanup

In File Explorer ensure you have "File Name Extensions" visible from the "View" tab of File Explorer. 5. Change the file name extension by renaming the file. eg. MyFile.JPG to MyFile.ICO
* Changing the default.png app from Photos to a different app, then back to Photos (that actually made the problem worse, because now windows is assigning the files this ugly blurry default icon instead of the Photos app icon) * Restarting my computer * Making sure Windows is up to date * Making sure my graphics driver is up to date
Although, regardless of these thumbnails not showing correctly, the images open, What i noticed is that the thumbnail for .jpeg images shows correctly but .png images doesnt. Same for application icons that have their icons in .png.
