The WTVR TV Tower is an 843-foot-tall (257 m) free-standing lattice tower in Richmond, Virginia. [1] It broadcasts WTVR-FM and has been in operation since 1953.
WTVR-TV's former transmitter is located behind the station's studio, and only WTVR-FM broadcasts from that tower today. It still remains as part of WTVR-TV's history. WTVR-TV is one of only a few stations in the country to have been affiliated with all three of the original major American television networks.
The station signed on as a translator for Liberty University's WRVL in 2004, on 96.1 MHz, using the callsign W241AP. In 2007, the station moved to Richmond and was reallocated to 106.1 MHz with 10 watts power, taking the callsign W295BF.
WTVR-FM operates at 50,000 watts, standard for most FM stations in the Richmond market. However, at 256 metres (840 ft), its tower is taller than the FM Class B limit of 150 meters. For much of its early history, WTVR-FM aired beautiful music, although by the 1980s, that mostly instrumental format was falling out of favor with younger listeners.

The main competitors for the analog VHF channel 12 license were Larus and Brother Tobacco Company , owner of WRVA (AM 1140) and WRVB-FM (94.5, now WRVQ ) and Richmond Newspapers, owner of WRNL and forerunner of Media General .
The tower itself is of the same design as the 750-foot (228.6 m) transmission tower on which ABC affiliate KQTV upstate in St. Joseph (which, coincidentally, also began broadcasting on the date KCTV commenced operations, September 27, 1953) maintains its transmitter antenna and the 843-foot (256.9 m) WTVR TV Tower in Richmond, Virginia. In the early 2000s, WCVE-FM nearly doubled its power, to 17,500 watts, from the same 840-foot tower. In the 2010s, the station reduced its power to 10,000 watts, coupled with an increase in antenna height, now at 990 feet (300 meters). [14] That gives WCVE-FM the same coverage but at less power due to the use of a taller tower.
