Stars slowly lose mass by the emission of a stellar wind from the photosphere. The star's magnetic field exerts a torque on the ejected matter, resulting in a steady transfer of angular momentum away from the star. Stars with a rate of rotation greater than 15 km/s also exhibit more rapid mass loss, and consequently a faster rate of rotation decay.
Star trails captured during a total lunar eclipse. In astronomy, diurnal motion (from Latin diurnus 'daily', from Latin diēs 'day') is the apparent motion of celestial objects (e.g. the Sun and stars) around Earth, or more precisely around the two celestial poles, over the course of one day.
All Stars is a 1997 Dutch sports comedy film, which was the base for the Emmy Award-winning television show of the same name. Directed by Jean van de Velde. Together with Mischa Alexander he was also responsible for the script. The film premièred on 2 May 1997. The sequel Old Stars was released in 2011.
The fixed stars includes all the stars visible to the naked eye other than the Sun, as well as the faint band of the Milky Way. Due to their star-like appearance when viewed with the naked eye, the few visible individual nebulae and other deep-sky objects also are counted among the fixed stars.
Because astronomical objects are at such remote distances, casual observation of the sky offers no information on their actual distances. All celestial objects seem equally far away, as if fixed onto the inside of a sphere with a large but unknown radius, [1] which appears to rotate westward overhead; meanwhile, Earth underfoot seems to remain still.
[citation needed] [dubious – discuss] In large cities, about 300 to 500 stars can be seen depending on the extent of light and air pollution. [citation needed] The farther north, the fewer are visible to the observer. [citation needed] The brightest star in the night sky is located in the southern celestial hemisphere and is larger than the Sun.
Sigma Octantis is the current southern pole star, whose counterpart is Polaris, the current North Star. To an observer in the southern hemisphere, Sigma Octantis appears almost motionless and all the other stars in the Southern sky appear to rotate around it. It is part of a small "half hexagon" shape.
[3]: 119, 124 [4]: 336–337 In some cases it can be difficult to determine how much of the Faraday rotation is in the external source and how much is local to our own galaxy, but in many cases it is possible to find another distant source nearby in the sky; thus by comparing the candidate source and the reference source, the results can be ...
