New Iberia is located in southern Louisiana, in the Acadiana region. The city of New Iberia is a part of the Lafayette metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 square miles (27.4 km 2), all land. A New Iberia native, Barras is the third of four children of Mazel Borel Barras (1924-deceased) and Elton Joseph Barras (1923–2007), a decorated United States Army first lieutenant in World War II, who operated a country grocery store from 1951 until 1969 and was then from 1969 to 1983 the chief deputy under Iberia Parish Tax Assessor Clegg J. LaBauve, Sr. (1906–1987).

It runs 5.39 miles (8.67 km) in an east–west direction from LA 89 at Lozes to LA 182 at Burke . The route connects U.S. Highway 90 (US 90) and LA 182, its de facto business route, between Lafayette and New Iberia.
The Kress store in Baton Rouge was the site of that city's first civil rights sit-in. That event helped save it from demolition 45 years later. [5] In 1964, Genesco, Inc., acquired Kress. The company abandoned its center-city stores and moved to shopping malls. Genesco began liquidating Kress and closing down the Kress stores in 1980.

Conn's market reach was broadened in 1999, when it opened its first store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and again in 2001, 2002 and 2003 when it opened its first stores in Austin, Corpus Christi, and in the Dallas-Ft.
