The Stratford Festival is a theatre festival which runs from April to October in the city of Stratford, Ontario, Canada. [1] Founded by local journalist Tom Patterson in 1952, the festival was formerly known as the Stratford Shakespearean Festival , the Shakespeare Festival and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival .
Stratford was a struggling town that had a dwindling railroad industry. [3] In 1952, Patterson contacted the British director Tyrone Guthrie and also reached out to Tanya Moiseiwitsch for theatre design. These three started the first season in 1953; the festival did not have a building yet and therefore performed in a tent. [4]
In April 2021, the Stratford Festival announced a season of plays and cabarets, most of which took place under canopies outside the Festival and Tom Patterson Theatres with reduced cast sizes and social distancing.
