Glasgow Film Theatre was built as the Cosmo by George Singleton in 1939. Main entrance. GFT's predecessor, the Cosmo, was Scotland's first arts cinema and only the second purpose-built arthouse in Britain, after the Curzon Mayfair in London. Opened on 18 May 1939, it was also the last cinema to be built in Glasgow before the outbreak of WW2. [2]
The Glasgow Film Festival was launched in 2005 and initially based in the Glasgow Film Theatre. The event focused on non-mainstream cinema and treated the audience as the main guests, quickly earning a title of one of the friendliest film festivals in the world. From less than 5,000 in 2005, attendance grew up to 40,000 in 2013. [1]

On 12 October 2008 Buchanan attended a special showing of That Sinking Feeling at the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT), after which he sat on stage being interviewed by musician Stuart Murdoch, the proceedings being filmed by the GFT. On the invitation of Buchanan, other members of the cast also appeared at the screening.
Hosted by Kaye Adams, the 2011 British Academy Scotland New Talent Awards took place at the Glasgow Film Theatre on 11 March and despite strong competition, the trio struck gold by taking home the Best Writing accolade.
