Lake Pontchartrain (/ ˈ p ɒ n tʃ ə t r eɪ n / PON-chə-trayn; [1] French: Lac Pontchartrain) is an estuary located in southeastern Louisiana in the United States. It covers an area of 630 square miles (1,600 km 2 ) with an average depth of 12 to 14 feet (3.7 to 4.3 m).

Fontainebleau State Park is located in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The park is 2,800 acres (1,100 ha) in size and was once the site of a sugar cane plantation and brickyard operated by Bernard de Marigny and later by his son Armand Marigny. The park has a multitude of habitats for birds.
Camp Leroy Johnson in New Orleans, Louisiana, was located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain in the area bounded west by Franklin Avenue, and east by Inner Harbor Navigation Canal. The camp was opened in 1942 as the New Orleans Army Air Base. The site was across the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal from the New Orleans Municipal Airport.

In 1837, the Tchefuncte River Range Lights was built to guide vessels across Lake Pontchartrain to the mouth of the Tchefuncte River. The lighting apparatus was supplied by Winslow Lewis and consisted of nine lamps with several 14-inch reflectors. The lighthouse was damaged sometime during the Civil War and was repaired in 1867.
