In 1995, both of those functions were ceded to the Iowa Supreme Court. The Association currently provides a broad array of services to its membership and the public.

Arabella Mansfield (May 23, 1846 – August 1, 1911), born Belle Aurelia Babb, became the first female lawyer in the United States in 1869, admitted to the Iowa bar; she made her career as a college educator and administrator. Despite an Iowa state law restricting the bar exam to males, Mansfield had taken it and earned high scores.
Byers was educated in the public schools in Wisconsin and Iowa. Byers read law and was admitted to the Iowa bar in 1888. He practiced law in Harlan, Iowa. From 1894 to 1898 and from 1900 to 1902, Byers served in the Iowa House of Representatives and was a Republican. He also served as speaker of the house.
