The Bronze Statuettes of Athletic Spartan Girl are bronze figurines depicting a Spartan young woman wearing a short tunic in a presumably running pose. These statuettes are considered Spartan manufacture dating from the 6th century B.C., [1] and they were used as decorative attachments to ritual vessels as votive dedications, such as a cauldron, [2] suggested by the bronze rivet on their feet. [3]
The bronze bust was dedicated in 1913 as a memorial to U.S. Army Colonel Richard Owen. It was funded by contributions from individuals and Confederate veteran associations in recognition of Owen's courtesy to Confederate prisoners of war while he was commandant of Camp Morton , a prison camp in Indianapolis, during the American Civil War . According to the Greek travel writer Pausanias (flourished 143–176 CE), a statue of Euryleonis was erected at Sparta c. 368 BCE. [5] It is one of few bronze statues that survive from anywhere in the Greek world, and in writing there are no personal statues of athletic or military victors in Sparta mentioned before the statue of Euryleonis. [5]
