It used to be the principal port of South Konkan region, carrying on trade with ports in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. During the 13th to 15th centuries this port was ruled by the Bahamani dynasty and was known as Mustafabad.
Dapoli has a seaboard of 50 km (31 mi) which stretches from Velas, Maharashtra Velas – Kelshi in the North to Dabhol in the South.
