Need for Speed: Underground is a 2003 racing video game and the seventh installment in the Need for Speed series following Hot Pursuit 2 (2002). It was developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts. Three different versions of the game were produced: one for consoles and Microsoft Windows, and another for the Game Boy Advance.
Races are roughly similar to that of Underground and still revolve around import culture. Underground 2 is the first game in the series to feature an open world called Bayview, which itself is based on the U.S. cities of San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The players can drive freely around and explore the city, unlocking areas by winning races.
The game rules for Underground is an adaptation of the Mayfair Exponential Game System, originally developed at Mayfair Games for the earlier DC Heroes roleplaying game depicting the DC Universe. However the rules were modified to depict lower-powered characters in a deadlier setting. The Underground game books had color-coded text.
