The current Rochester Community High School building was designed by Everett Brown Company and opened in the fall of 1965 to the south of the Rochester City Park. Barnhart Field, home of Zebra football, was constructed in the 1970s at the east end of the school campus, and additional wrestling space and a second gymnasium were added later.

In 2017, Gary Community Corp became the first school system in Indiana involved in a state takeover. Control of the district was transferred from the elected school board and appointed school superintendent to the State of Indiana's Distressed Unit Appeals Board, which placed MGT Consulting and Emergency Fiscal Manager Peggy Hinckley in charge of managing the district.
