Replaced it with polymer double-stack Ruger mags of varying capacities, and zero problems. IDK if the same single-stack 10-rd metal mag is still offered by Ruger for the GSR; Did some looking on Ruger site, and don't see it. ETA: Many current pix on Ruger site of the GSR rifle "seem" to show the same steel mag I got long ago.
I have shot both an AR 9mm 16" carbine and the Ruger 9mm carbine (the original version, not the most recent type with the M-Lok forend) with both the AR and Ruger using Glock compatible magazines. The Ruger really interests me, especially with the new forend. I plan on using the carbine for PCC events.
The IWI Zion-15 has a super nice receiver. It's good as-is, but if you want to change anything, it's a good starting point to work with. The Ruger seems alright, but the Zion is really nice. The Ruger is tight, but that may make it more sensitive to dirt or cleaning. The Zion seems just right and the receiver is as nice as any high end ones.
The 18" Ruger AR-556 MPR 18" is a better rifle than any of the factory AR offerings mentioned in the original post. Better barrel, better trigger, rifle length gas, Magpul accessories for a incredibly low price. Ruger AR-556 MPR 18" gets my vote! Attached File
Currently own a Ruger 556 of which I am extremely happy with, especially as I picked it up for $600. Over the course of 10 months I've done a few modest improvements to it including a Magpul CTR stock and carbine hand cover, a ALG Defense ACT trigger, a Radian Raptor ambidextrous charging handle and last but not least a Sig Sauer Romeo 5 red dot sight all totaling just under $300 as purchased ...
I've narrowed down my choices to the following: Colt LE 6940 and Ruger SR 556. I've watched Nutnfancy's review (on youtube) concerning the Ruger, and it looks to be awesome. Also, from what I've read, the Ruger is much easier to maintain/clean because of the gas piston design. Also the gun stays cooler and the weight may even be an advantage.

One of the limitations with the .204 Ruger in an AR platform is the magazine. Your maximum bullet C.O.A.L. will be around 2.30" I have had the best luck with feeding reliability with ASC SS 10 round mags and the inside dimension is 2.316"OAL. I have had good results with a Shilen Barrel.

Between the M&P 15 Sport II (Model 10305) and Ruger AR 556 MPR (Model 8514), these are both upgraded models and not the lowest cost S&W, or Ruger. This past week, the Ruger MPR was an easy choice with it's 2-stage trigger, salt bath nitrided 5R barrel/ free floating handguard for accuracy, and included rifle-length gas system with Magpul PMag ...
