Occoquan Historic District is a national historic district located at Occoquan, Prince William County, Virginia. It encompasses 60 contributing buildings in the town of Occoquan. The buildings are predominantly frame, two-story, residential structures although the earliest examples are constructed of stone or brick.
Rockledge, is a historic home located at Occoquan, Prince William County, Virginia, United States, near Washington D.C. It was built in 1758 from stone at the request of John Balladine, a wealthy local industrialist. Architect William Buckland worked on this house. [3] [4] The historic marker on the site reads:
Historic houses in Occoquan include a 17th-century house at 206 Mill Street and Rockledge Manor, a Georgian mansion built in 1758 by John Ballandine and British architect William Buckland. [7] Two hotels in the town date back to the early 1800s: the Hamill Hotel built in 1804 and the Occoquan Inn built in 1810. [ 7 ]

The complex began as a prison farm called the Occoquan Workhouse for nonviolent offenders serving short sentences. The District established an adjacent reformatory in 1914, and then a 10-acre (4.0 ha) walled penitentiary constructed by inmates from 1931 through 1938, as a division of the reformatory with heightened security.
