Croydon station opened on 1 December 1882 as Warrandyte, when the railway line from Camberwell was extended to Lilydale. [5] It was renamed Croydon on 1 August 1884, like the suburb itself, the station was named after Croydon in Surrey, England. [6] The name was suggested by local landowner Gregory Lacey, whose wife was originally from Croydon. [6]
The line runs from Flinders Street station in central Melbourne to Lilydale station in the city's east, serving 27 stations via Burnley, Box Hill, Ringwood, and Croydon. [ 2 ] The line operates for approximately 19 hours a day (from approximately 5:00 am to around 12:00 am) with 24 hour service available on Friday and Saturday nights.
