Idabel lies between the Little River and the Red River, about 21 miles (34 km) west of the Oklahoma-Arkansas state line and 40 miles (64 km) east of Hugo. The Idabel Armory in Idabel, Oklahoma was built in 1936 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. [1] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. [1] It is a single-story building built of sandstone. Its main portion is 86 by 124 feet (26 m × 38 m) and it has two 30 by 92 feet (9.1 m × 28.0 m) wings. [2]
The northern section runs between Hinton and Moore in central Oklahoma, while the southern section runs from the Texas state line at the Red River to Idabel, in southeastern Oklahoma. The northern section of SH-37 runs 65.8 miles (105.9 km) from US-281 in Hinton to Sunnylane Road (former SH-77H ) in Moore.
SH-87 is shown on the Oklahoma state highway map as concurrent with US-259 to at least Idabel. [2] However, this is an error, as the highway is only signed from US-259 to the Arkansas state line, and is shown on ODOT's internal control section maps as ending at US-259. [1]
Entering the state south of Davidson, the highway serves Oklahoma's southern tier before exiting the state east of Broken Bow. It serves the cities of Ardmore, Durant, Hugo, and Idabel, as well as Tillman, Cotton, Jefferson, Carter, Marshall, Bryan, Choctaw, and McCurtain counties. US-70 was first established in Oklahoma in 1926.

Maps indicate that US-259 and SH-87 overlap to Idabel, but officially, this is not the case, [3] and ODOT signage does not reflect a concurrency. US-259 bypasses Idabel to the south and east, concurring with U.S. Highway 70 Bypass. East of Idabel, the bypass route ends, and US-259 begins a concurrency with mainline US-70 and SH-3.
