Antarcticoolithus is an oogenus of large fossil eggs from the Maastrichtian part of the Lopez de Bertodano Formation of Seymour Island, Antarctica. The genus contains the type species A. bradyi, described by Legendre et al. in 2020. [1] The fossil egg, the first found in Antarctica, was discovered in 2011 by a Chilean team of researchers.
Egg fossils are the fossilized remains of eggs laid by ancient animals. As evidence of the physiological processes of an animal, egg fossils are considered a type of trace fossil . Under rare circumstances a fossil egg may preserve the remains of the once- developing embryo inside, in which case it also contains body fossils .
The Tangbian Formation contains a rich record of dinosaur egg fossils and embryos. Most of the known egg clutches can be associated with oviraptorosaurs, although rarer egg fossils are known from hadrosaurs, troodontids, and possibly dromaeosaurids. [4] [5]
Phaceloolithus is nearly spherical, measuring 167–168 mm long and 140–150 mm across. The eggshell is very thin, measuring from 0.5 to 0.7 mm thick. [1] Like most other non-avian dinosaur eggs, [3] Phaceloolithus's shell is stratified into two layers: the prismatic layer on the outside, and the mammillary layer on the inside. [1]
The eggshell has a smooth surface, and at 25–36 mm thick is thinner than most other eggs of the ratite morphotype. [1] [2] Erosion and recrystallization heavily affect most Ageroolithus specimens, but a few fragments are well enough preserved to observe the microstructure. It has two structural layers with a sharp dividing line between them. [1]
An ancient flamingo fossil egg between 8,000 and 12,000 years old was uncovered at a busy construction site for a new airport in Mexico, officials from the Latin American country said. The ...
Subtiliolithus is an oogenus of fossil egg from the Nemegt Formation of Mongolia and the Ohyamashimo Formation of Japan. The eggs are notable for a very thin eggshell. It contains three oospecies: S. hyogoensis, S. kachchhensis and S. microtuberculatus.
