At around the same time, houses for the working classes were constructed in the area between the two railway lines to Sutton and Wimbledon. The Local Government Act 1894 reconstituted the district as Sutton Urban District and an urban district council replaced the local board. In 1928 the Urban District grew to take in the westerly strip parish of Cheam (which was 4% larger) from Epsom Rural District and was thus renamed Sutton and Cheam Urban District . [ 2 ]
Sutton Library is situated close to the top of the town, near St Nicholas Church and the Holiday Inn Hotel, and is part of a complex which contains the Civic Offices, home of Sutton Borough Council, and the Sutton College of Liberal Arts. It is the largest library in the borough.
Worcester Park is a suburban town in South London, England. It lies in the London boroughs of Sutton and Kingston, and partly in the Surrey borough of Epsom and Ewell. The area is 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Charing Cross. The suburb's population was 16,031 at the time of the 2001 census.
Buses travel along the A217, north to Epsom and Sutton and south to Reigate and Redhill. Lower Kingswood is situated very close to Junction 8 of the M25. Bus Transport is not the best, buses end at 7:45 coming south from Redhill and Reigate.
Alton Line calls at the far southwest Surrey town, Farnham. Epsom Downs Branch from Sutton and then Belmont in Greater London to Banstead and Epsom Downs. Tattenham Corner Branch Line calls at Chipstead, Kingswood and Tadworth. Oxted Line calls at Oxted and Hurst Green. Redhill to Tonbridge Line serves Redhill and Godstone.
Sutton has formed part of Greater London since 1965. [3] The town is often referred to as "Sutton", "Sutton, London", or "Sutton, Surrey" for mailing addresses. Surrey was the former Postal County and remains the historic or traditional county in which Sutton lies.
