Bannerghatta National Park is situated 22 km south of Bangalore. This hilly place is the home for one of the richest natural, zoological reserves. The 25,000 hectares (101 km 2) zoological park makes this a major tourist attraction of Bangalore, which is very crowded during weekends and holidays.
It was planned in 1889 [1] after the great plague of 1898, developed as a suburb in 1892 and handed over to the city municipality in 1895. [2] [3] As per the 1878 Survey of India map, the area came under the village of Ranganatha Palya [4] and was later named after the Kadu Malleshwara Temple. [5]

The city was destroyed and deserted in 1565 by marauding Moghul invaders and its ruins now lie scattered over a 26 sq. km area south of the river Tungabhadra. The rocky area near Anegundi to the north of the river has been identified as Kishkindha of Ramayana times.

The 65,127.5 acre (260.51 km 2 [4]) national park is located about 22 km south of Bangalore in the hills of the Anekal range with an elevation of 1245 - 1634m. [5] The park has a hilly terrain of granite sheets under moist deciduous forest valleys and scrubland on higher areas. [6]
The garden gets its name from a bugle call made on top of a very large rock formation to alert the nearby dwellers. It is densely covered with trees and one can usually see and hear a number of bats perched on the trees. There is a water tank with motifs of famous people from Karnataka. Indigenous and exotic botanical species found in the park are about 68 genera and 96 species with a total of around 6000 plants/trees. Indigenous species found in the park are: [9] artocarpus, cassia fistula, ficus, polyalthias etc., and exotic species such as araucaria, bamboo, castanospermum australe, grevillea robusta, millettia, peltophorum, schinus molle, swietenia mahagoni, tabebuia. sp etc.
