The five-paragraph essay is a form of essay having five paragraphs: one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with support and development, and; one concluding paragraph. The introduction serves to inform the reader of the basic premises, and then to state the author's thesis, or central idea.

It is an element of Canadian Army, United States Army, United States Marine Corps and United States Navy Seabees small unit tactics, and similar order styles are used by military groups around the world.
All the sentences within a paragraph should revolve around the same topic. When the topic changes, a new paragraph should be started. Overly long paragraphs should be split up, as long as the cousin paragraphs keep the idea in focus. One-sentence paragraphs can be emphatic, and should be used sparingly.
