Ranger Staff Training is the course required to become a member of probationary staff at HMRS. The course covers leadership skills, instruction techniques, survival skills, and drill and ceremonies. The course is only open to Cadets. The course is an on the job training course, pairing Staff Candidates with a basic Squadron.

The 7th Ranger Training Battalion was added to administer this phase. The most recent duration change to Ranger School occurred in May 1995, when the Desert Phase was removed from the Ranger course.
