John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music.

Giant Steps is a studio album by the jazz musician John Coltrane.It was released in February 1960 through Atlantic Records. [1] [2] [4] This was Coltrane's first album as leader for the label, with which he had signed a new contract the previous year.

The title track is a modal rendition of the Rodgers and Hammerstein song "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music.The melody is heard numerous times throughout, but instead of playing solos over the written chord changes, both Tyner and Coltrane take extended solos over vamps of the two tonic chords, E minor and E major (whereas the original resolves to G major), [8] played in waltz time. The song is a contrafact of Miles Davis's "Tune Up", which is reharmonized to the Coltrane changes. [ 3 ] [ 5 ] The original recording has been described as having "resolute intensity . . . [that] does more to modernize jazz in 141 seconds than many artists do in their entire careers".
