The street is about a mile and a half long, and formerly had several posting-houses, as it was the road to Windsor, which have now become pubs. It has long been the principal street of Hammersmith. [2] On 26 January 2018, a water main in King Street burst, flooding the street. 70 people were led to safety by the London Fire Brigade. [3]
It is also served by two London Underground stations named Hammersmith: The District and Piccadilly lines station is located directly below the shopping centre, with entrances at either end of the centre, while the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines station is located a short distance north of the centre at Beadon Road.
King Street. Stretching about 750 m (820 yd) westwards from this centre is King Street, Hammersmith's main shopping street. Hammersmith has been the seat of the Polish Social and Cultural Centre, known as POSK in King Street, for several decades. It houses a number of organisations which serve Polish expatriates and others interested in Polish culture, including a theatre, an exhibition space, a library and archives as well as retail and dining facilities.
The George, Hammersmith, now a branch of Belushi's. The George is a Grade II listed public house at 28 Hammersmith Broadway, Hammersmith, London. [1] It was built in 1911, by the architects Nowell Parr and A E Kates. [1] It is now a branch of the bar/restaurant chain Belushi's.
The Hammersmith & City line's and Circle line's station of the same name is a separate station to the north-west. The two stations are separated by Hammersmith Broadway. [8] The lifts at this station, which were replaced towards the end of 2013, provide step-free access between the platforms and the main entrance on Hammersmith Broadway. [9]
