This is a form of safe co-sleeping , and has little risks associated with sudden infant death syndrome , unlike bedsharing.

SIDS has become much less common in recent decades but it still remains a leading cause of infant mortality, killing about 3,500 babies a year in the U.S.
Bassinet usage in the United States nearly doubled to 20% from 1992 to 2006. [2] Greater than 45% of babies up to two months used a bassinet. [2] By 5–6 months, however, fewer than 10% of babies sleep in bassinets. [2] In a hospital environment, a special form of sealed bassinet is used in a neonatal intensive care unit.
In the UK, more than 200 babies die suddenly and unexpectedly every year from SIDS. But there are many ways to reduce the risk.
The sleep position is also important to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). [9] It is recommended that the proper position for children to sleep in to avoid SIDS is laying on their back throughout the night. Their bedding should be firm and crib should be free from toys or blankets that could cause injury or suffocation to the child.
