Wayland is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The town was founded in 1638, and incorporated in 1780 and was originally part of neighboring Sudbury (incorporated 1639). At the 2020 United States census , the population was 13,943.
The Wayland Center Historic District encompasses the predominantly 19th-century village center of Wayland, Massachusetts.Located at the junction of United States Route 20 and Cochituate Road (Massachusetts Route 27), it includes fifteen well-preserved 19th-century buildings that form one of the best-preserved village centers of that period near Boston.
Wayland was founded in 1837, but did not grow significantly until a plank road was constructed through what is now the historic district in 1852. Commercial activity in the center of town dates from 1854. The village was platted in 1861, and additional plats were recorded over the next decade as more inhabitants moved in.
In the late 1860s citizens in the towns of Sudbury, Wayland, and Weston petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts to build a railroad through their towns. On February 21, 1868 the state chartered the Wayland and Sudbury Branch Railroad to run 6.75 miles from Mill Village in Sudbury through Wayland to a connection with the Fitchburg Railroad at Stony Brook in Weston.
