Disc golf is a game based on the rules of golf (referred to by disc golfers as "ball and stick golf"). It uses discs smaller and denser than an ultimate disc. The discs are thrown towards a target, which serves as the "hole". The official targets are metal baskets with hanging chains to catch the discs.
Turn is the tendency of a disc to bank ("turn over") to the right (for RHBH throws) at high speeds during the initial part of the flight. A disc with a +1 rating is most resistant to turning over, while a -5 rating will turn the most. Discs rated -3 to -5 make good roller discs. Discs with less turn are more accurate in the wind.
The sport of disc golf is set up similar to a game of golf. A "round" is played on a disc golf course consisting of a number of "holes", usually 9 or 18. [17] Each hole includes a tee position for starting play and a disc golf target some distance away, often with obstacles such as trees, hills or bodies of water in between. [18]
One of the earliest distinctly freestyle disc maneuver was the tip, the act of quickly pressing fingers on the bottom of the disc to maintain or alter its position without catching the disc or letting it fall to the ground. [9] [10] Tipping first began in the early 70s, becoming more popular and refined by 1975. [11]
The receiving team then picks up the disc and becomes the throwing team. The receiving team must catch the disc cleanly in one hand, and may not move from position until after the disc leaves the hand of the thrower. The disc may not be trapped between the hand and any other part of the body, including the other hand.
A flying disc with the Wham-O registered trademark "Frisbee". A frisbee (pronounced / ˈ f r ɪ z b iː / FRIZ-bee), also called a flying disc or simply a disc, is a gliding toy or sporting item generally made of injection-molded plastic and roughly 20 to 25 centimetres (8 to 10 in) in diameter with a pronounced lip.
Disc Golf Association's [5] Mach 1 Disc Pole Hole disc golf basket was invented by Ed Headrick. [ 6 ] [ 7 ] It was the first formal disc golf target to incorporate chains and a basket on a pole, and became the Technical Standards used by the PDGA. [ 8 ]
The world's first permanent disc golf course went into the ground in 1975 at Oak Grove Park in Los Angeles County, California. [3] Approximately 75% of the world's disc golf courses are located in the United States. Some of the most notable ones include DeLaveaga, Maple Hill, Blue Ribbon Pines, Brewster Ridge, Diamond X, and Milo McIver. [4]
