The railroad owns three classes of steam locomotives. The K-27, K-36 and K-37 engines are all outside frame 2-8-2 "Mikado" engines built by Baldwin Locomotive Works. As of 2023, of the ten steam locomotives currently owned by the C&TSRR, Nos. 463, 484, 487, 488 and 489 are all operational.
The class eventually became known by the nickname "Mudhens". Today, No. 463 is operational on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. Fifteen locomotives were built, originally class 125, then reclassified K-27 in 1924 when the D&RG became the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW).
The Durango & Silverton originally owned four of the surviving K-37s, but they found that the #497 was too hard on their track and did not handle the Animas Canyon section of the route as well as they would have hoped.
