The U.S. Model 1840 light artillery saber has a brass hilt and knuckle-bow of about 6 inches in length, the grip wrapped in leather and bound with brass wire, and a blade of 32.25 inches in length.
The sword had a 31-inch (79 cm) blade (some being slightly longer), a cast brass hilt resembling the more expensive wire-wrapped leather grips, and a leather scabbard rather than the steel used by cavalry troopers and officers, although some makers, such as Emerson and Silver, issued a steel scabbard rather than leather to protect from wear.
Nonetheless, the review eventually recommended maintaining the current pattern saber and the M1902 remains the regulation sword for officers of the US army. The M1902's modern role is completely ceremonial, and it is virtually never carried except in parades and ceremonies, by commissioned officers in command of troops in formation.

The silver-plated, cruciform hilt is derived from the NCO sword, pattern of 1840. The ovid pommel is decorated with an applied Federal eagle. The crossguard bears the monogram M.A. in old English block letters (Military Academy). The straight single-edged blade is fitted to a browned metal scabbard trimmed with silvered mounts.
