The Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) was established in 1948 as the Dhaka Art School. [1] It was the first art school in the region and became the main centre of art and cultural practice. Since 1956 it has been situated in Shahbag , Dhaka , close to the Bangladesh National Museum .

The first formal art school in Dhaka – the Dhaka Art College [citation needed] (now Faculty of Fine Arts) – was founded in Shahbag by Zainul Abedin in 1948. [citation needed] The art college building, constructed in 1953–1954, was designed by Mazharul Islam, the pioneer of modern architecture in Bangladesh. [55]
The branch in Chittagong, Bangladesh's second largest city and headquarters of the eponymous district, grew out of the private-sector art gallery Chattagram Kalabhaban. The gallery was founded by artist and professor Rashid Choudhury in 1972, two years before the national academy came into being.
