The News-Herald began as the Willoughby Independent on April 18, 1879, was renamed Willoughby Republican in 1920, and became the Lake County News-Herald in 1935. Its offices moved from downtown Willoughby to 38879 Mentor Avenue (U.S. Route 20) in 1950, then to its current location, 7085 Mentor Avenue, adjacent to Mentor, after 1973. [2]
The current News-Herald format was established under the Heritage Newspapers brand in 1986, when the late industrialist Heinz Prechter brought the old News-Herald (based in Wyandotte, MI) and Mellus Newspapers (based in Lincoln Park, MI) from SEM Newspapers Inc. and combined them into a single Downriver publication each

The paper was founded in 1904 as the Joliet Herald. In 1913, its founder, Ira Clifton Copley, purchased the Joliet News, a paper that had been founded in 1877. In 1915, the two papers were merged producing the Herald-News. In 2000, Copley Press sold the publication to Hollinger International (later the Sun-Times Media Group).
