The church was built in 1892 to serve what is now the oldest Polish-speaking parish in New Jersey. [4] [5] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. For much of its modern history it has been known for its former school, St. Anthony High School, and its historic basketball program coached by Bob Hurley, Sr.
The present church building dates to 1882, and once contained a main sanctuary (still in use today), and a smaller sanctuary on the lower level of the church building. The "lower church" was largely unused since the late 1960s and was renovated into a community room in the mid-1980s.

Bishop Hughes laid the cornerstone on Sept. 17, 1848. Rev. Louis Dominic Senez, assistant at St. John's was named the first pastor. The church was dedicated on March 10, 1850. St. Patrick's was the third Catholic church in Newark, after St. John's and the German parish of St. Mary's. The old ward mansion became an Orphan's Asylum.
