Emil R. Buchser High School was a public high school in Santa Clara, California.It graduated its first class in 1960 and changed its name in 1981 to Santa Clara High School, which was around many years at a much older location before Buchser High's campus.
In 1981, rival Buchser High School closed, and Santa Clara High School moved to its campus. [5] [6] [a] Because of the influx of former Buchser students into the Santa Clara student body, the school changed its mascot, logo, and yearbook name. [5] [7] Santa Clara High shares a longstanding rivalry with crosstown Wilcox High School.
The Santa Clara Unified School District experienced declining enrollment throughout the 1970s and 1980s, resulting in the closure of 15 schools and significant restructuring before the 1981–1982 school year. [17] [26] Buchser High School closed, and its campus was repurposed as Santa Clara High School's new location.
Around 1982, Mt. View High School closed its Castro Street and the name transferred to the Awalt High School building. The same year, Santa Clara closed the downtown location which became Buchser Middle School, and the Santa Clara High School name transferred to the Buchser High School location. In 1981, Peterson was converted into a Middle School.
