The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is a zoo and aquarium in the United States, one of only six major zoo and aquarium hybrids in the United States.Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Highland Park, the zoo sits on 77 acres (31 ha) of park land where it exhibits more than 4,000 animals representing 475 species, including 20 threatened or endangered species.
The Tropical Rainforest habitat was the 2019 winner of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Design Award. [ 22 ] The National Aviary opened The Garden Room, a 9,000-square-foot year-round event and education venue, in October 2020.

Pittsburgh is home to the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and the National Aviary, all over a century old. Kennywood , a classic amusement park, is located in West Mifflin, and the Rivers Casino is on the North Shore along the Ohio River , just west of Kamin Science Center and Acrisure Stadium .
The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is also within the park, as is the Washington Boulevard Bike Track, a banked half-mile oval loop for bicyclists. [ 4 ] The park was founded in 1889, and opened in 1893 after Pittsburgh Director of Public Works, Edward Bigelow , spent more than $900,000 in city funds to buy the land, parcel by parcel, from farmers.
