Roach, Dashwood and Carver watch as a car is pulled out of the river with the body of a young woman inside. They question the car owner who had reported it stolen, but he is clearly hiding something. D.S. Roach must inform Sgt. Cryer that it was his son, Patrick, who was driving the car when it went into the river, and that he'd left the scene.
Melvin is sent to check out a strong smell coming from a flat. Finding a man dead, Ken suspects foul play and that drug users have been in the flat. Roach is sent to investigate. He finds out a gang of squatters were living in the flat and they might be responsible for the man's death. It turns out the man died from a heart attack.
Shaw pulled up beside the parked car and Roach pointed a .22 caliber rifle through the car window at Taylor demanding money. Taylor gave the men his wallet while Shaw forced Hartness into the back seat of his car. Shaw then gave orders for Roach to kill Taylor. Roach then shot and killed Taylor, who was still sitting in his parked car. [1]

P.C. Jim Carver begins his CID training by working on an all-night obbo with D.S. Ted Roach. Due to Carver's inexperience and Roach's lax attitude, they both miss a flatbed trailer stealing a digger from a building site. Roach and Carver follow up their suspicions about the site security guard, and find he has stolen the equipment.
Roach also sweet-talks the man whose garden he crashed into by offering to get him into the Special Constabulary. PC Hollis grasses on Roach to Brownlow, in the hope of getting the clerk's job. Desperate to save his sergeant's career, Galloway gets Dashwood to trace the stolen scotch to Brownlow's golf club, and manages to get Roach off the hook.
