The land the district sits on was once owned by former Madison Mayor Breese J. Stevens. [3] In 1893, Stevens sold the land to the University Heights Company for $53,000. Buildings in the district began being constructed the following year.
In 1909 the city of Madison approved building a structure to bring the scattered vendors together in one organized space. The Sherman Avenue Historic District is a historic neighborhood along Lake Mendota on the east end of the isthmus in Madison, Wisconsin, United States, consisting mostly of middle class houses built from the mid 1890s to the late 1920s.
Louis Hirsig was born in 1876 forty-five miles south of Madison in Monroe. Starting at age 14 as an apprentice tinsmith in Monroe, he worked his way into the retail business in Madison. About 1913 Hirsig commissioned Madison architect Alvin Small to design a home.
