  4. Keppra Side Effects : r/EpilepsyDogs - Reddit

    www.reddit.com/r/EpilepsyDogs/comments/108jsir/keppra_side_effects

Keppra and phenobarbital can make dogs anxious so I wouldn't worry about aggressive play. Phenobarbital may need to be increased if the blood work shows it isn't already maxed. I believe Keppra decreases the effectiveness of phenobarbital. Which is not to say you shouldn't still use it. My dog is on Keppra phenobarbital and potassium bromide.

  5. Weaning off Keppra, last hope urgent advice requested - Reddit

Keppra is known to have minimal side effects/less severe side effects as those of phenobarbital or potassium bromide, but some pups do react more strongly to it and absolutely do not tolerate it well. There have been pups that needed to wean off of it and switch to another anticonvulsant very shortly after starting.

Kane is also 4 1/2 and has been on Keppra since the end of March, Zonisamide was added a few weeks later. Then 16 days ago, he had a dozen seizures within 24 hours, so Phenobarbital was added immediately. The side effects from Phenobarbital are real. Loss of strength/coordination mainly in test legs, excessive drooling, thirst, and hunger.

  7. Do side effects from phenobarbital come and go? : r/EpilepsyDogs...

My foster dog (he’s an approx 3 year old pittie mix) started phenobarbital 3 weeks ago after having multiple seizures in a 24 hour period. He was already on Keppra and had been for months. The phenobarbital side effects were rough for about 10 days. He was uncoordinated, fell off the sofa constantly, had a hard time getting up the stairs.

  8. Starting Phenobarbital for my dog with epilepsy : r/EpilepsyDogs...

There is a wealth of information. There are other effective meds with fewer side effects. Phenobarbital is cheap, but you make up this difference in required liver tests. There is zonisamide and keppra, and my dog takes both. We had to ween him off phenobarbital because of the side effects and liver enzymes.

  9. Dogs switching from keppra to pheno today. Is he okay to be alone...

That won’t be the case for everyone, so don’t panic. They ended up continuing the keppra and adding more meds. To answer your question, there were a lot of side effects when adding pheno to the keppra. The way our neurologist explained it, keppra is like beer, and pheno is like 90 proof liquor.

The pharmacy called then and explained the patient was a 100# border collie and they wouldn't budge. Costco is beating the price the GoodRx coupon was going to give me. I pay $135 monthly for 120 pills of 750MG of Keppra ER, 240 pills of 100 MG of Zonisimide, and 60 pills of 97.2MG Phenobarbital.

EDIT: Not sure why my phone auto-corrected the word “on” to “pneumonia”… My dog did not get pneumonia from Keppra. Lol. Hello everyone. Our boy is a 4 yo St. Pyrenees who experienced his first seizure in February. We took him to an emergency vet and they said to just monitor him.
