While the purchase price of a CFL is typically 3–10 times greater than that of an equivalent incandescent lamp, a CFL lasts 8–15 times longer and uses two-thirds to three-quarters less energy. A US article stated "A household that invested $90 in changing 30 fixtures to CFLs would save $440 to $1,500 over the five-year life of the bulbs ...
Fluorescent lamps convert more of the input power to visible light than incandescent lamps. A typical 100 watt tungsten filament incandescent lamp may convert only 5% of its power input to visible white light (400–700 nm wavelength), whereas typical fluorescent lamps convert about 22% of the power input to visible white light. [32]: 20
In the 1970s, 34-watt energy-saving F40T12 fluorescent lamps were intoroduced in the United States. In the 1980s, T8 32-watt lamps were introduced, [ 8 ] but unlike the T8 tubes introduced in Europe, these T8s are not retrofits and require new matching ballasts to drive them.
The 2009 IECC, chapter 2 defines high efficacy lamps as compact fluorescent lamps, T-8 or smaller diameter linear fluorescent lamps, or lamps with a minimum efficacy of: [21] 60 lumens per watt for lamps > 40 watts, 50 lumens per watt for lamps > 15 watts and ≤ 40 watts, and; 40 lumens per watt for lamps < 15 watts
Looking at the maths, if 90% of a 60 W bulb goes as heat, then it produces 6 W of visible light. If 30% of the equivalent CFL's energy input is converted to heat, then it produces 7.7 W of visible light. Yet our table says that the first produces 700 lm and the latter only 660 lm. There are clearly discrepancies here.
Twist-lock 120/230-volt MR16 halogen lighting of 35/50 watt, since the mid-2000s. Also used for compact fluorescents and LED lamps. GZ10: 7004-120-1: 10 mm: Twist-lock 120/230-volt MR16 halogen lighting of 35/50 watt, differs from GU10 by use of a dichroic reflector. GZ10 fixtures can use GU10 bulbs, but not vice versa. G12: 7004-63-2: 12.0 mm
